[NEWS] EKITI POLL: INEC GETS 14-DAY ULTIMATUM TO PROSECUTE VOTE BUYERS OR FACE REDRESS

THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC RIGHTS AND ACCOUNTABILITY PROJECT, (SERAP) HAS ISSUED A 14-DAY ULTIMATUM TO THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC) TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF  VOTE BUYING BY BOTH THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS AND THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY DURING LAST SATURDAY’S GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION IN EKITI STATE AND PROSECUTE THOSE FOUND CULPABLE OR BE READY TO FACE LEGAL ACTION.

SERAP, IN AN OPEN LETTER DATED JULY 17TH 2018 AND SENT TO INEC CHAIRMAN, PROFESSOR MAHMOOD YAKUBU, ON TUESDAY, URGED THE INEC BOSS TO PROMPTLY, THOROUGHLY AND EFFECTIVELY INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF VOTE BUYING AND TO COLLABORATE WITH THE INDEPENDENT CORRUPT PRACTICES AND OTHER RELATED OFFENCES COMMISSION AND THE ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMES COMMISSION IN ANY SUCH INVESTIGATION.

IN THE LETTER SIGNED BY SERAP’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ADETOKUNBO MUMUNI, THE ORGANIZATION NOTED THAT IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF INEC AS AN INDEPENDENT BODY TO TAKE MEANINGFUL STEPS AND ACTION TO MINIMISE ELECTORAL BRIBERY BY POLITICIANS, ENSURE POLITICAL EQUALITY AND PREVENT UNFAIR ELECTORAL COMPETITION.
